The decision between a single deck and a double deck vibrating screen shapes a plant’s output from day one. It sets how many products the machine makes, how much structure it needs, how it is maintained and what it can grow into. The choice sounds like a matter of counting, and it is really a matter of duty design. What a second deck actually does
A single deck machine makes one cut and two products: overs and unders. Add a second deck below the first and the machine makes two cuts and three products in the same footprint. The top deck takes the coarse cut and, just as usefully, absorbs the impact and spreads the load, delivering a calmer, thinner stream to the finer deck below. The two decks work as a system, not as two independent screens that happen to share a body.
What it costs to add one
Nothing is free in screening. The second deck adds mass, so the body, drives, springs and supporting structure all grow with it. It adds height, since material needs room to fall between decks and chutework multiplies. And it adds the classic maintenance question of every multi-deck machine: how do you inspect and re-mesh the bottom deck? Less obviously, a double deck earns its place even where only the fine product matters, by using the top deck as a relief deck: a coarse mesh that strips out the bulk of the oversize and shields the fine, fragile, expensive mesh below from impact and overload. A worked example: one quarry, two answers
A quarry needs 20mm-down splitting into 0 to 4mm and 4 to 20mm, today, at 150 tonnes an hour. A single deck machine cutting at 4mm does it cleanly, and the budget prefers it.
